The Davies

Alright, I apologize for the cheesy blog title, but over on my Dave Brosha Education I wanted to start a yearly “award” (but more of an acknowledgment) to the members of my community doing great things.

The wealth of talent within that group is astounding (if you love photography and are not yet a member, feel free to request to join), and every week I see photographers of a multitude of genres posting up incredible work. I wanted to tip my hat to some of that work.

I put out a call a few weeks back that simply said, “I want to see what you think was your most impactful image of 2022”. The prize? A $1250 workshop credit and a signed print.

Wow, did people ever respond.

Hundreds of entries poured in, featuring incredible images across the spectrum of photography and creativity. This meant, of course, that I had to then look at each and every image and do the impossible task of selecting a “winner” (I hate that term, but it is what it is) amongst hundreds of powerful images.

…and, well, here they are. My faves. The ones that really caught my eye out of dozens and dozens and dozens that caught my eye (my first cut still had 55 images). I’m dubbing these “The Davies”, because, um, “The Most Impactful Images Submitted by Members of Dave Brosha Education” seemed a little unweidly.

First place goes to….Lawrence Bernstein, for a remarkable portrait he photographed of his mother. It’s simple, clean, and powerful. It has the power to make you smile, but also to realize the power of time. It makes you yearn for more connection to the elders in your own lives. It is, in short, beautiful, powerful, and timeless.

A huge congratulations, Lawrence.

As for the other images here….they were all “the winner” at least at one point in my brain. I went back and forth so many times. But these are all incredibly powerful images…and I wish, selfishly, I had taken all of them.
