Northern Balance

The summer in the Northwest Territories comes alive in July with the arrival of fireweed, which always seems to brighten up landscapes, especially when ominous rainclouds fill an evening sky.

Used a 3-stop Singh Ray GND (Hard Stop) filter for this image.

Photographed along the Ingraham Trail outside Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

The Mirror

I teach a series of outdoor photography workshops; part of my “course” includes a conversation on how it is my belief that in pretty much any scene you can find something interesting by looking for different details such as light and lines, and sometimes more importantly, moments.

Shooting into the sun, the sky wasn’t perfect photographing in this direction – it made for an interesting reflection but it didn’t have particularly vibrant colours or character. But when I saw one of my participants wander into my field of view, creating a nice silhouette I knew I had my picture…she was the missing element to tie together an ‘okay’ photo into something a little more.

Photographed the first week of April, 2010 – one of the better "light shows" I’ve seen.

For this shot I got in tight to the bottom of a cliff and shot skyward with my 15MM F/2.8 fisheye lens, trying to take in as much of the sky as I could.

I love the shape of the Aurora Borealis in this one…it looks, to me, like a giant angel sweeping down from the heavens.

Collision Of Us and Them

Usually, when photographing night scenes, what I compose is about the natural night (i.e. – the stars, the moon, the Aurora Borealis). At times, however, adding some “pollution” – in this case the reflection of my brake light on the ice road that crosses Prosperous Lake, Northwest Territories, can actually make for a more interesting image.
