The summer in the Northwest Territories comes alive in July with the arrival of fireweed, which always seems to brighten up landscapes, especially when ominous rainclouds fill an evening sky.

Used a 3-stop Singh Ray GND (Hard Stop) filter for this image.

Photographed along the Ingraham Trail outside Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

More from one of the nicest sunsets I’ve seen, moments after a downpour on Cavendish Beach, Prince Edward Island.

Technical info: ISO 100, F/5.6, 4-second exposure. I used a 3-stop ND filter to allow for the long exposure, and then two 3-stop GND filters to balance the light between the sky and beach/sea.

The skies above Cavendish Beach, Prince Edward Island – home to one of the more spectacular beaches in Canada and a famous rocky red shoreline – remain ominous after a early summer storm.

Technical info: ISO 100, 32MM, F/11, 2-seconds. The image used two 3-stop Cokin GND filters to balance between sky and shoreline detail.

My plan the entire day was to go photograph some sunset photos of Cavendish; not 3 minutes after I left our rental cottage, the sky opened up and started pouring. Annoyed, I went and grabbed a newspaper and was about to give up, but then thought, “what the hell…”. I drove down to the beach and decided to wait – worse comes to worse I’d learn a little about the world in the process.

Patience paid off, and about 15 minutes after the rain drove streams of people off the beach, it stopped, and over the next hour I was treated to one of the nicest sunsets of my life. Spectacular.

Technical info: this was photographed with approximately 6-stops of stacked GND filters to hold back the bright sky and still expose for the shadows. 2.5-second exposure @ F16, ISO 100.
