Engaging Journalists
Category: Engagement and Relationships, Portraiture

When Andrew and Lauren – two of Yellowknife’s finest journalists – approached me to photograph their engagement photographs they had me hooked within the first sentence of their vision, which began “we want something a little bit off-the-wall”.  I smelled creativity, and was very heartened to see yet another client believing that personal photography can mean more than sitting in your Sunday best smiling pretty.

For the purposes of this shoot (and after we brainstormed a few ideas) we thought that instead of shooting “just a bunch of images” that the idea of a “storyline” for these images would be really cool.  Give them some direction. We would start with studio shots that bordered more towards normalcy, and then follow that up with “the story”.

We came up with a quick plot of an editor hitting on a young journalist.  At first she resists his advances, but he is relentless in his pursuit, and against her better judgement, she falls for him.  Passion ensues…but then tragedy.  A classic whodunit?

I love these kind of shoots – the creative challenge of them -  and I invite anyone who commissions me to capture their images to similarly think “outside the box”.  Thank you, Andrew and Lauren, for the challenge.  It was a blast.
